The Dark Knight Shatters Box-Office Records: $155.4 Million
Written by Jay on July 21, 2008 – -
We all knew The Dark Knight sequel was going to make over $100 million during the first weekend and many predicted it was going to break the previous record; and it did.
Christopher Nolan’s dark sequel took in $155.4 million in The Dark Knight’s opening weekend. The previous record, I believe, was held by Spider-Man 3 which made $151.1 million in the opening weekend.
But this weekend of breaking Hollywood movie records didn’t stop there. This weekend also topped the most the movie box-office has made in a three-day weekend. And yes, that includes all the movies like Mamma Mia which took in $27.6 million on it’s opening weekend.
The previous record was a $218.4 million weekend in July 2007 when Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest came out.
Wait, the records aren’t done yet. The Dark Knight is projected to make $220 million in its first week alone which would be more than what Nolan’s Batman Begins movie made in its entire U.S. run alone.
Hold on, there are a few more records to mention:
The Dark Knight had the biggest midnight release taking in $18.5 million, the biggest weekend on IMAX screens with $6.2 million, top single-day take on a Friday with $67.9 million and showed on the most screens at 4,366.
Now that’s what you call making an impact on your opening week!

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) coming to the Nintendo DS
Written by Jay on July 19, 2008 – -Looks like Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is making it’s way to the Nintendo DS! That is going to be a deadly combination, I mean, the Nintendo DS sells probably 20 million units in the U.S. alone and when you combine that with GTA (the most recent GTA4 game sold tons!), that is a profit just waiting to happen!
It looks like the Grand Theft Auto series is hitting the Nintendo DS with Chinatown Wars. I couldn’t find when it’s coming out exactly but supposedly it’s expected to hit stores later on this year, but who really knows?
GTA: Chinatown Wars will be based in Liberty City and it’s described as an “entirely original” entry into the GTA franchise. Of course, we have so many protesters against violent games I’m sure we’ll be having people rising up against Nintendo for bringing the GTA franchise into their territory.
But everyone can’t be pleased… but I know I will. I recently got the Nintendo DS so you know I’ll be getting the GTA: Chinatown Wars when it comes out!

NFL Will Monitor Players Who Use Gang Signs On-Field
Written by Jay on July 18, 2008 – -The professional sports leagues are stepping up to prevent any gang-related activities. The NFL will be reviewing game tapes to ensure players are not flashing hand signals of street gangs. I mean, players have to watch out with their touchdown celebrations even more!
Supposedly, League Officials have been avoiding gang-related activities for quite sometime, though, nothing has really been implemented to protect from this. But finally, it looks like the league hired some experts to look at game tapes to identify players or team officials who might be using gang signals.
Let’s hope that “eagle two, hawk down” signal call for a play isn’t ruled a gang signal.
But the gang-related scrutiny got a little more serious after the shooting of Denver cornerback Darrent Williams in 2007. It was said that Williams was involved in a dispute with known gang members.
The NFL also took notice after everyone made a big deal of Boston Celtics player Paul Pierce’s alleged gang sign (see image below). I’m not sure if that was the same exact “gang sign” but according to Pierce, “I 100 percent do not in any way promote gang violence or anything close to it.”
We all remember when he got stabbed at a nightclub a few years back don’t we? Hey, I’m not saying it was gang-related but more of a coincidence.
But we’ll see what happens with the NFL’s reviewing of gang signs. I included an image of various gang signs, just incase you guys were interested! (Click the image to see the full size)

Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel Finally Break Up
Written by Jay on July 17, 2008 – -
Wait, a celebrity break-up? Seriously? Latest would be Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel, two comedians who stayed together longer than we all expected to.
After 5 years, just months after celebrating their anniversary they broke up for unknown reasons. Well, unknown to us, the public. But like I said, who didn’t expect Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel to break up? The shocking news isn’t them breaking up, it’s how long they’ve actually made it!
Maybe it was because of Matt Damon (see video below on Sarah Silverman F*cking Matt Damon). I mean, there’s been a running gag and feud between Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel which is pretty hilarious, if you ask me.
Wait, you’re not asking me, are you?
Or maybe it was Ben Affleck? I mean, you see that steaming video between Ben Affleck and Jimmy Kimmel? Well, it looks like Jimmy was getting back at Sarah by “F*cking Ben Affleck” lol!
But whatever the reason for the breakup, I think we all knew it was coming sooner or later, right? I mean, two comedians in a relationship… pretty obvious, right?
Well, Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel are over but I think that’s going to bring up some interesting jokes from the both of them. I mean, two comedians who don’t hold back? I can’t wait!

2008 Home Run Derby Winner - Justin Morneau Stuns Josh Hamilton
Written by Jay on July 15, 2008 – -Photo credit: MLB.com
Despite hitting a record-setting 28 home runs in a single round, Josh Hamilton just didn’t have enough gas to beat out Justin Morneau for the 2008 Home Run Derby crown.
The Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton opened his first round of hitting by breaking the single round record with 28 home runs. Though, with all the excitement and hype, I think fatigue must have gotten to him in the final round as he only managed to hit 3 home runs to Justin Morneau’s 5.
Although, Morneau won the 2008 Home Run Derby, I’m pretty sure people will remember the 28 home runs in a single round more than they will for the actual winner. And it was pretty unfortunate that the record breaker couldn’t win.
Of course, you guys can remember the previous single round record was 24 that was set by Bobby Abreu. The difference between Abreu and Hamilton is the fact that Abreu went on to win the Home Run Derby title.
It’s funny how the Home Run Derby works, especially the fact that Josh Hamilton ended up hitting more total home runs in that first round than Justin Morneau did in all three rounds (eight in the first, nine in the second and five in the final round).
Hamilton dominated the competition in the first round. I mean, the other three who moved onto the next round – Morneau, Lance Berkman and Ryan Braun – hit a combined 23 first-round home runs. That’s what you call starting off with a bang!
Now, the first four that were eliminated – Dan Uggla, Grady Sizemore, Chase Utley, and Evan Longoria – combined for 20 home runs. Though, all of them had some pretty far shots, and a bunch was hittin the upper upper decks!
Well, either way, Morneau ended up with the title but Hamilton ended up with the record and a majority of the publicity.
Maybe next year!
