My Favorite MLB Ken Griffey Jr is Being Traded to the Chicago White Sox

Written by Jay on July 31, 2008 – -

ken griffey jr traded

It looks like Ken Griffey Jrs’ days at Cincinnati are over. Apparently, Griffey is being traded to the Chicago White Sox pending the players decision.

Griffey is a 10-year veteran with at least five years playing for the same team so he holds the veto power over any potential deal involving himself.

But honestly, why wouldn’t Griffey go to Chicago? The White Sox are a contending team, matter of fact they’re in first place in their division right now.

The only downfall is the White Sox play in a hard division. But then again, so does the Reds and they haven’t had a winning season for a while.

There has been no word on who the Chicago White Sox are going to give up for this future hall-of-hamer player. Maybe it’s because Griffey has yet to agree to the trade.

As a huge Griffey fan, I want him to win a World Series. And honestly, I don’t think it will be with the Reds.

We will see what happens.

Griffey Throws Throat Slash Signal at Broadcaster Brantley

Written by Jay on July 31, 2008 – -

If you know Ken Griffey Jr, you know he’s not the type to be surrounded by controversy. I mean, with all the speculations with steroids, corked bats, or anything slightly controversial, Griffey’s name is never mentioned… until now.

Apparently, on Saturday night after Griffey hit his 607’s career homerun, he crossed the plate and then did a throat slash signal.

Now, we all know that sign means “it’s over”, “you’re dead”, “I will kill you” or at least something on those lines. Well, this is very unusual for Griffey but that signal was aimed at Reds broadcaster Jeff Brantley.

Well, Brantley is probably one of the worst announcers but what makes it worse, he’s the announced for the team Griffey plays for. So, that just tells me he isn’t cheering for his team, he isn’t supporting his team, matter of fact, if you’re a Cincinnati Reds sports announcer within the teams organization, shouldn’t you stick up for your players?

Okay, so what did he say?

Griffey said “He said I’m pouting because the Reds haven’t picked up my option ($16 million) for next year. If I was that concerned about money I wouldn’t have come here in the first place.”

That is very true indeed; especially the fact Griffey took a lot less money to play for the Reds than his worth (at the time).

But Brantley claims he never said that and the subject wasn’t broached until they both sat down in the players dining room early Sunday. Brantley stated, “And I think he’s upset that I said something about the defense of the corner outfielders (Adam Dunn, Griffey).”

So, who’s wrong here?

Well, Brantley for still having a mullet. But I don’t think there’s any wrong here. I’m a Griffey fan and I’m glad he stuck up for himself.

We’ll see how this plays out.

Arrests Made After Minor League Benches-Clearing Brawl

Written by Jay on July 25, 2008 – -

Peoria pitcher Julio Castillo took a bench-clearing brawl to another level. A standard baseball brawl actually lead to an arrest and potentially a criminal offense.

The 20-year-old Dominican right-handed minor league pitcher was arrested on a felony charge Thursday night after he heightened the brawl incident by hitting a fan with a baseball in the first inning of the Chiefs and Dayton Dragons’ game.

I was looking for a video on this and couldn’t find it. But once I do, I will definitely be posting it on here so make sure you subscribe to my RSS Feeds so you don’t miss out. Or simply enter your e-mail address below.

Supposedly, right before the benches cleared, Castillo threw a fastball towards the opponents dugout and speculations has it that the ball bounced off and hit a fan in the crowd.

2008 Home Run Derby Winner - Justin Morneau Stuns Josh Hamilton

Written by Jay on July 15, 2008 – -

Justin Morneau Wins 2008 Home Run Derby

Despite hitting a record-setting 28 home runs in a single round, Josh Hamilton just didn’t have enough gas to beat out Justin Morneau for the 2008 Home Run Derby crown.

The Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton opened his first round of hitting by breaking the single round record with 28 home runs. Though, with all the excitement and hype, I think fatigue must have gotten to him in the final round as he only managed to hit 3 home runs to Justin Morneau’s 5.

Although, Morneau won the 2008 Home Run Derby, I’m pretty sure people will remember the 28 home runs in a single round more than they will for the actual winner. And it was pretty unfortunate that the record breaker couldn’t win.

Of course, you guys can remember the previous single round record was 24 that was set by Bobby Abreu. The difference between Abreu and Hamilton is the fact that Abreu went on to win the Home Run Derby title.

It’s funny how the Home Run Derby works, especially the fact that Josh Hamilton ended up hitting more total home runs in that first round than Justin Morneau did in all three rounds (eight in the first, nine in the second and five in the final round).

Hamilton dominated the competition in the first round. I mean, the other three who moved onto the next round – Morneau, Lance Berkman and Ryan Braun – hit a combined 23 first-round home runs. That’s what you call starting off with a bang!

Now, the first four that were eliminated – Dan Uggla, Grady Sizemore, Chase Utley, and Evan Longoria – combined for 20 home runs. Though, all of them had some pretty far shots, and a bunch was hittin the upper upper decks!

Well, either way, Morneau ended up with the title but Hamilton ended up with the record and a majority of the publicity.

Maybe next year!

CC Sabathia Wins Brewers Debut

Written by Jay on July 8, 2008 – -

CC Sabathia Brewers

Recently traded southpaw ace CC Sabathia begins his National League career with a winning debut. I mean, Sabathiamania took over Miller Park and CC Sabathia definitely did not disappoint.

For those of you guys who don’t follow Major League Baseball, I don’t expect you to read past the title. But if you’re still with me, you probably heard of the trade of reigning AL Cy-Young winner CC Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians to Milwaukee Brewers. The trade surprised a lot of people but it just showed the Brewers are no longer trying to wait for a playoff run; they want it now.

And as of Tuesday night, this is a sure step in the right direction. CC Sabathia got the win, he kept his team in the game and it looks like the rest of the National League needs to watch out.

Don’t get me wrong, CC Sabathia didn’t have his best game but he got the job done and a quality start out of it. A win is a win.

So far so good for CC Sabathia and the Brewers, but looks like the Cubs aren’t waiting either, they just acquired Rich Hardin and Gaudin from Oakland.

Looks like the NL Central is going to be hard to compete with!

CC Sabathia… good luck to you!

Pat Venditte the First and Only Switch Pitcher in Baseball?

Written by Jay on June 24, 2008 – -

pat venditte switch pitcherIf you are a baseball fan, particularly a New York Yankees fan, you should know who Pat Venditte is. And if you don’t, Pat Venditte is the only professional pitcher who is recognized for being a switch-pitcher.

Wait, what? A switch-pitcher? Don’t you mean a “switch-hitter?”

As most of you guys already know, a “switch-hitter” is a term in baseball in which a batter can hit from both sides of the plate. But like I said, no, I didn’t mean “switch-hitter,” I meant a “switch-pitcher.”

Pat Venditte is ambidextrous but he takes it way past batting, he can throw effectively both right-handed and left-handed. Now, that is what you call talent! I mean, it’s unheard of in professional baseball… until now.

Venditte was drafted by the New York Yankees organization and he currently plays in the minor leagues. In Venditte’s first minor league appearance, there was a usual incident before he faced his last batter of the inning. It’s funny because he was facing a switch-hitter and apparently both of them kept switching sides to get the better match-up.

The conclusion: The umpire ruled in favor of Pat Venditte so the switch-hitter had to choose one side to bat from and then Venditte would have the option of which arm to throw with. While there still has been no official ruling by Major League Baseball, it seems it will be the other way around; pitcher chooses which arm to throw and then the batter chooses which side to bat from.

Venditte also has a custom-made glove so it can be wore on either hand whenever he needs to make the switch.

Honestly, I think it’s pretty unbelievable what Pat Venditte can do on a professional level. I couldn’t believe it until I saw the video below:

Hey, I might not be able to throw like Pat Venditte, but I bet you I can kick from both sides better than he can!
