Tyson Gay’s World Record Sprint Won’t Count in the Books
Written by Jay on June 30, 2008 – -
If you guys have been paying attention to the Olympics and everything, you should have probably heard of Tyson Gay’s 9.68 seconds win in the 100 meter race. And yes, yesterday, Tyson Gay ran the 100 meters faster than anyone ever has. Unfortunately, it will not go in the World Record books.
Was he disqualified? Nope.
Did he cheat? Nope.
Was it an error? Nope.
Apparently, the world record 100 meter sprint will not go into the books because of a tailwind. Yup, a minor push of the wind.
When Gay was up for his race, the wind was blowing at 4.1 meters per second, and apparently, anything above 2.0 is not allowed for record purposes. I guess when it comes to split second race decisions, every aspect is taken into consideration.
Prior to Tyson Gay’s 9.68 seconds 100 meter sprint, the previous World Record was 9.69 seconds held by Obadele Thompson who set that record in 1996.
I’m not sure if it really matters if this particular race goes in the books or not, what matters is the fact that Tyson Gay will be officially competing against the world after he passed the Olympic trials.
